Mr. Moose And His Cowboy Boots!

So I know that I have told everyone about my sweet friend Caleb (aka. Moose). He is the coolest kid! You can almost count on him to wear his cowboy boots every day except Friday...only because we have PE and they need tennis shoes :) When Caleb found out that I too owned a pair of cowboy boots, he begged me to wear them to school so we could be twins! Well...it is not humanly possible to deny this sweet little boy anything! :) So, last week, I kept my promise to Mr. Moose and wore my cowboy boots! :) I told him that I would post it on our blog for the world to see, and he was sooooooo excited! :) So, here we are with our matching cowboy boots...twins for the day! :)

Me and Caleb!
Thanks for making me smile everyday sweet friend!

Edible Maps!

This week in Social Studies, we have been learning all about Maps! We learned about different kinds of maps, how to read a map, and how to create/understand a map key! After we filled our brains with all this new information, it was time to get creative and make our very own maps...oh and did I mention that these were maps that we could EAT! :) They had so much fun!
We started off by creating a map key to help our map readers know what everything was!
*Pretzels = roads
*Chocolate chips = mountains
* Green mini M&M's = trees
*Red mini M&M's = the cafe
*Orange mini M&M's = the store
*Yellow mini M&M's = cabins
*Blue sprinkles = lakes
Let me just tell you how much fun this was! Well...I will let you judge for yourself by the pictures below :)
The green group getting started! I see a few mountains and roads already in place!

I would also like to thank Mrs. Ellis, Mrs. Haubert, and Mrs. Moody for coming in to help with our maps! You guys are awesome!!!!

Word Collectors!

This week in writing we read a story called, Max's Words. In this story, Max was feeling a little down because both of his brothers were collectors, and he was not. He decided to start a collection of words one day, and he discovered so many new things. He learned that he could collect words that he knew, words that gave him a fuzzing feeling inside, color words, etc. The one day, he decided to use his collection of new words to create a story. We decided that we wanted to be just like Max, because he created an amazing story with his new words. Each child was asked to start a word collection at home. They could find words in magazines, newspapers, menus, or  anywhere else they could find words! Then, we used our new words to create stories in our journals. They are not quite finished yet, so I am going to share with you our unfinished products! :) We have some really great stories coming to life in Room 108! I cannot wait until they are finished!
Cannon has a great story started about football players marching onto the football field.

Cooper is writing away as he creates a story about a sports event he and his dad attended.

Kinsley has a wonderful story started about a day with her mom and brother.

The yellso group has lots of new words to use in their stories!

Miss Kaylie Grace has a great "word bank" to help her story come to life!

Man! Emily has a really great story started! I can't wait to read it!

We really enjoyed using new words in our writing! The stories are so exciting, and the kids could not wait to share during our share time...even though their stories were not finished. My little "firsties" are so smart and creative! I know I have said it before, but I am one lucky teacher!!!!!

Math Game

In math we have been working on addition strategies. This week my little friends learned how to solve addition equations that have a missing partner. We have become "The Masters of Counting On". When one of the partners is missing, we put the first number in our head and count on until we get to the total. We practiced this strategy a lot this week, and then we played the number quilt game! They LOVED it! Here are a few pictures of my little friends counting on to find the missing partner in their equations!

Tabitha and Steven are working hard to find their missing partners!

The yellow group hard at work! I can hear Brooks now, "I've got _ in my head..." Love it!!

The green group LOVED this game!
I love Kinsley's hands in this picture! Here missing partner is 6!

Victoria found her missing partner!

I caught Cooper counting on! :)

Our Personal Stories! :)

For the past two weeks, we have been learning all about how to write a personal narrative. We started this short unit by listing all kinds of memories we have had in our lives. The list they created was great. We came up with ideas about vactions, losing our first tooth, getting a special present, our first pets, playing a sport, getting a video game, etc. We created a GREAT starting place for our writing. :) Next, we chose a special moment in our lives and planned out our writing. Then, we turned our "ideas" into sentences and learned how to add details. (This was our read, revise, and edit phase) Finally, we began to publish our writing with a title, a detailed cover page, detailed pictures, and neat handwriting. Let me just tell you....their stories are going to knock your socks off! They are so awesome! You really are not going to believe a first grader created these stories! This was such a fun writng unit for me, because I got to learn a little more information about my first grade friends. Here are a few of my friends stories...I hope to record more stories next week! Here we go...

Our Community

This week, we have been learning all about communities! We learned about cities, suburbs, and rural communities. After filling our brains with information about different types of communities, we learned about our own community, Powdersville. My little friends had to break into groups create a mural of Powdersville. They had to think of buildings around our community, people they might see in our community, as well as other things that make Powdersville so special. They did such a great job! Here are a few pictures of all my little friends working together to create their Powdersville Murals!

They did such a great job working together, and their murals turned out AMAZING!!

Mrs. Jones and Oliver Come to Room 108!

Wednesday was our lucky day! Mrs. Jones and Oliver made their monthly visit to Room 108. Mrs. Jones and her sidekick Oliver visit every classroom at Concrete Primary once a month to teach us all about the character traits that can help us be a better friend and person. Some of the character traits Mrs. Jones and Oliver will be teaching us about this year are fairness, trustworthiness, caring, responsibility, and respect.

On Wednesday, Mrs. Jones and Oliver reviewed what it was to be a bucket filler. Being a bucket filler is a big job! Bucket fillers show others respect, help out, and do nice things for others without having to be asked. Being a bucket filler also means that you make others feel good about themselves and encourage and support them whenever you can. I am always looking for bucket fillers in our classroom and let me just tell you that we have a LOT of bucket fillers in our room. When I catch someone filling someone elses bucket, I put a note in Mrs. Jones's bucket. On Friday, Mrs. Jones and Oliver pick a few names out of the bucket and read the note on the morning news. They also give the bucket fillers a special prize for being so caring and supportive of others.

Here are a few pictures from Mrs. Jones and Oliver's visit to our class...

This cool cat is Oliver!

After Mrs. Jones shared a book with our class, my little friends got to choose a fish out of Olivers bucket. Each fish had a bucket filler action or a non-bucket filling action on it. They had to decide if it was a bucket filler or not! They had so much fun!

Finally, Mrs. Jones and Oliver celebrated our August and September birthdays!

Our class is full of bucket fillers! My bucket is filled EVERY day by my little friends, and they work VERY hard to fill the buckets of other people in not only our class, but our entire school!
